Changing MD3000i from dual controller to single controller config

We have a MD3000i which had it second controller fail.

This is a old device and we are not planning on replacing the bad controller.

The unit is in state of failure because its still looking for the other controller.

How do I switch it a a single controller config so the warnings go away it its Optimal again?

The firmware is 07.35.39.64

Thanks

MD3200 and vSphere 6

We are connecting our old MD3200 SAN to our vSphere 6 environment as a backup system.
We have a NetApp as the primary storage system.

We will be cloning some 100 VMs for future testing over to the MD3200.

At some point, the primary vSphere 6 environment will be shipped out and we will keep the MD3200.

Down the road, we may want to reconnect the MD3200 to a new vSphere environment.

The question I have is,

when we connect the MD3200 to a new vSphere 6 environment at some point in time and make the iSCSI connections, will the volumes be initialized

or

once I make the connection and add them to the vSphere 6 environment, will the VMs will be available by adding them to the inventory?

thanks

MD3000i RAID Controller problem

Hello

This is similar to another, recent post but I didn't want to hijack the thread so here goes.

We have a Dell MD3000i with dual controllers hosting a Hyper-V failover cluster. The unit is in production but now out of warranty. Management have told me they are prepared to take the risk while the hardware is retired and replaced so I have sourced spare parts and will have to make do (I know, crazy situation!).

Anyway MDSM reported a problem battery on the RAID controller in slot 1. I followed the instructions in the support guru, taking controller 1 offline so all iSCSI traffic failed over to controller 0, which it did successfully. I pulled the controller in slot 1 and replaced the battery with a spare. I reinserted the controller module and brought it back online in MDSM.

Unfortnately the controller in slot 0 doesnt seem to re-establish the iSCSI connections. It seems to go through a cycle of trying to come online but fails. During this time there is sporadic loss of connectivity to the VMs hosted on the SAN. In the event log the good controller in slot 0 reports the 'RAID controller Module reset by its alternate' before critical 'Optimal wide port becomes degraded' and 'degraded wide port becomes failed' messages.

I let this go on for about 30 mins before offlining the controller in slot 1, removing and reinserting it and trying again. Same problem - so I have taken it offline for now and everything is working through the single controller in slot 0 but without the redundancy. Amber LED is still lit on the unit.

Any ideas what I can try next? Is it worth taking the cluster down and power cycling the SAN?

I do have a spare RAID controller so replacing the slot 1 controller is an option.

Any help will be greatly appreciated (i've attached the support information from the unit)

Many thanks

Charles

How to increase capacity on existing virtual drives in a disk pool?

I have a PowerVault MD3620f

Get MD3600i controllers to run as standalone, after running in pair.

Hi

We have two MD36 chassis, that is taken out of service, the first one has two MD3600i controllers og the other one has no controllers.

We would like to use these in our vmware test setup instead, but have problems with using the chassis with only one controller.

In the deployment Guide from Dell, it states that it is possible to run with only one MD3600i controller in the chassis, but we cannot get them to accept that the other controller is removed.

We tried a  sysWipe from the serial console, with no luck.

Do any one know how to reset the system to factory (md3600i controller board),  to enable it to run as a stand alone controller.

Any help is dearly appreciated.

/Steven

I have a dell r710 and an MD1000.  I am using a Perc 5/e and I cannot get the bios to see the disks.  I get an Unknown error.  I have tried multiple cards, I have tried different emm's.  I have switched disk.  The MD1000 does work on another server just not the R710.

Any Ideas?

Configuration of Dell NAS NX3200 as File and Storage Server

Hi Everyone,

I have a Dell NAS NX3200 device with 6 TB of Space and 32GB RAM. Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard Edition is installed on this Machine (Not Storage Edition). Scenario which i want to implement on this NAS is explained below in detail:

Currently 4 Different Departments File Servers on 4 different machine are in production. All these 4 server machines are providing File and storage services to the clients / users of their respective departments (HR, Admin, IT and Planning). All of these users access there server machines shared folder with specified paths like: \\ServerName (HR)\shared_folder_name, \\ServerName(IT)\\shared_Folder. I want to discontinue all these server machines and migrate their folders with the existing user rights(Read/Write/Modify) to the particular folders.

I want to configure this NAS as like if i am an IT user i just write \\IT in the run dialog box and folders with my rights are just there to display, and if a HR user wants to open his shared folders he just write \\HR and folders shared with HR user are displayed. And same goes for other Departments. I have used Windows Server Enumeration feature to control this option, but still one step away from the exact scenario which is: i have to have mention the NAS name before accessing my folders like: \\nas\IT or \\nas\HR which i dont want.

Help is required in this regard plz.

latency on MD3420

Hello

I’m working with a Hyper-V Cluster of 2 R630 and a MD3420 (RAID 5 of 24 HDD SAS 10k 1To).

This cluster hosts especially 1 Exchange 2010 server (700 Mbx), 2 Exchange 2013 (30mbx and 100mbx).

I’m facing some latency problems in my Exchange servers, especially during VEEAM Replication job.

While troubleshooting I have some questions:

  1. Is the sizing of my storage OK ?
  2. My MD3420 has only one LUN,  I would like to know if it is normal that the iops of the disk_pool are the double of the iops of the DATA virtual disk (there is no other virtual disk, excepted the disk dedicated to the Quorum)

Verify hard drive firmware update procedures.

Hi Everyone:

I am looking to verify hard drive firmware update procedures to make sure I have not missed anything. If anyone knows more that this or could verify this is correct, it would be helpful.

The procedure list I have is:

Steps to update the firmware:

Ensure you have a tested backup of the data contained on the array

It is highly recommended to gather support bundle from the "Support" tab of the MD Storage Manager before performing any firmware upgrade operations. Also recommend getting another support bundle after the upgrade is complete.

You must stop all I/O going to the array

Load MDSM to verify connectivity, then close MDSM but leave the main management screen open

From the main management screen in MDSM use the “upgrade raid controller firmware” on the “devices” screen to upgrade to the latest firmware

Verify connectivity through MDSM

Update the hard drive firmware if applicable
Reboot the stack

Power down the server(s)

Power down the MD3000(i)

Power down any attached storage (MD1000/12xx)

Leave the power off for 2-3 minutes

Power up in reverse order

Verify connection to the array and virtual disks and verify that data is presented to each of the connected servers

This update process will take 60-90 minutes but will vary depending on how long the reboots take to complete.

Good morning,  I need to factory reset a PowerVault MD3000i that was donated to our school.  the service tag of the unit is <removed>.  and a transfer of ownership was completed on Wednesday this past week.  i cannot seem to get the controller cards in to service mode.  it has the second-generation firmware version 07.xx.xx.xx. i have tried the password listed on the forums "supportDell"  and that does not work.  How can I access these controller cards to reset them and configure them for our internal network.  Any and all assistance is greatly appreciated!!

MD3460, degraded Host Interface Port Status

$

I have an MD3460 connected to two servers equipped with 6 Gbps SAS HBAs, with one SAS link per controller per server. (Total of four links) The servers run Redhat 7 with multipath configured.

For some reason, three of the four SAS links get reported as "degraded" in the RAID Controller module on the MD3460 array. Also, the virtual disks have a tendency to fail over to the non-preferred path all the time. Some move from controller 1 to controller 0, and some move the other way. Even so, both servers can access all LUNs on both controllers, so nothing actually seems to be in a non working state.

What could be the reason for the "degraded" status of the ports, and is it probable that the "degraded" port status is behind the virtual disk controller failovers?

Firmware version is 08:25:08:60

/Andreas
