PS6100 battery replacement

$

Hi Support,

I would ask questions about Equallogic PS6100XV:

- the battery is a single part number that can be purchase or is "embedded" in the controller and so a controller replacement is needed in case of fault=?

- Battery is a consumable part or not ?

- Battery is a replacement part covered by warranty ?

Many thanks in advance for answers.

We have a MD3400 with 4 disks and now we want to add 8 more similar disks. We have esxi vms residing this storage. Can we add disks without taking down the esxi hosts, expanding the volume on the fly?

MD3000i Controller failure

Hi Everyone and thanks for any response,

Relative newbie here undergoing trial by fire learning.

We have an MD3000i array connected to two R610 host machines.  Windows 2008r2 cluster hosting our vms.

Received a message in MDSM saying bad battery in controller 1.  Went through the support guru process and replaced the battery.  Upon restarting the controller it has failed.  After removing and adding the array to MDSM I receive the messafae "The storage array contains a controller which has not been added....."  I am able to ping the ethernet port on the failing controller intermittently.

From my research I've pretty much resigned myself to having to replace the controller.  My question is what happens if the firmware levels on the two controllers don't match.  Due to the age of the equipment it appears I need to buy a refurbished controller unit and I won't know the firmware level until I can power it up.  The firmware on the existing, working controller is not the most recent according to Dell's website.

My understanding is that the two controllers will talk to each other and try to match firmware.  Am I in danger of losing my array and all the data on the disks when I try to get the controllers both synched?

Any suggestions are welcome and appreciated.  Thank you

Chuck

Adding tapes to DR4100 Virtual Tape Library with DPM 2012R2

Hi, I've been using a Dell DR4100 for iscsi VTL with DPM 2012 R2. I followed the whitepaper "Setting Up the Dell™ DR Series System as a VTL Backup Target on Microsoft® Data Protection Manager" here to setup my DR4100 and DPM Server with 20 tapes. I have been using this successfully for a few months now but have begun to run out of free tapes.

I added 20 new tapes via the DR4100 interface follwing instructions on the document mentioned above. This leaves me with 40 slots on my VTL, but the new twenty slots are showing empty. The question I have is, is this expected behaviour, or is there something else I need to do in DPM to see tapes in the slots?

I have one free tape at present in the original 20 slots, and perhaps once that is used a new tape is created automatically? Of this I am not sure?

MD Storage Manager Won't Install

Hi,

I've reinstalled my PC (Windows 10) and I'm trying to reinstall MD Storage Manager. I've downloaded the latest resource CD 6.5.0.1. I've been unable to get this to install. It gets stuck at 'Extracting duplicates' - I'm just trying to install the Manager not he host software.

I've also tried

CD 6.1.0.6 and CD  6.0.0.12

The same thing happens.

I can only assume I'm missing something basic.  Any suggestions?

Thanks.

MD3600 premium features

I have a MD3620F that does not have a current support agreement. I went round and round with Dell about pricing information on premium features of this array. Different sales departments told me to contact other sales departments and finally told me to contact technical support.

Can ANYONE give me pricing information on the premium features for the MD3620F? Secondary would be who would I need to contact to purchase a key for a premium feature because apparently Dell themselves do not know?

Thanks!

All 23 slots are reporting empty (including the cleaning tape slot 23).  Tapes are in the unit.  Problem started when exporting a tape it worked as expected.  Another tape was sitting behind that tape.  Had to open the rear panel to remove the second tape.

In addition the following error is given.

I have removed and re-seated the magazines a number of time and ensured that the door is closed.

Also tried to use the device menu to bulk unload tapes but the tapes are not recognized.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

RAID/Array Recovery with replacement hardware (md3200i -> md3800i)

$

Hello,

I've been searching for the past couple of days for an answer to this with no luck, so if there is information on this somewhere already, my appologies.

Anyway, Our md3200i recently broke (both raid controllers simultaneously) and we are out of warranty, and out of support period, and it's too costly JUST to replace the old md3200i controllers.

After some searching, we've found a slightly used md3800i and will be acquiring it tomorrow. Now, with all of that out of the way..

I have a backup of the storage configuration (as a .cfg file) for our existing setup. Unfortunately, there are some important files on the existing array that are NOT backed up (a stupid mistake.) and we cannot afford to lose them. Is it possible to initialize the md3800i with the same layout configuration, and the same disks from our md3200i (they are all 3.5" SAS, and 2 of the 6 are less than a year old) WITHOUT losing our data?

I'm trying to get all my ducks in a row before even beginning to do anything with the md3800i this weekend. And, no, it's impossible to boot the md3200i. the raid controllers will start, and initialize network, but no connection can be made (they are pingable though) but the front of the enclosure blinks the amber fault and i've tried for a few days with no success to spring them back to life, so simply copying data over is not an option.

I need to be able to just take the drives from the md3200i and use them with the same configuration in the md3800i -- without losing the data.

Thanks for the help.

Solid amber on MD3000

I've got an MD3000 with dual controllers attached with two SAS cables to a single HBA5 card (dual ports). It's been running fine for a number of years. I have out-of-band management and can currently ping both units.

I just replaced a failed drive in an attached MD1000 and put in another drive which I was about to set up as a hot spare. That's when all the drive lights went out and the amber went solid (it was flashing previously due to the failed drive).

I've read that this stuck "reset state" is the result of a failed controller. I find it odd that both my controller's have failed simultaneously.

Hi Guys,

I need to re-provision this NX3230 as a server.   Can I install Windows Server 2012 R2 and upgrade the ram to 64GB RAM.   Is the limitation of RAM BIOS based or is it just arbitrary?

Thank you,

Data safety concerns with the "Replace Member Disk" task of a PowerVault MD1200

$

Hello Everyone,

I have a PowerVault MD1200 and I want to replace one of its hard drives (which, according to the OMSA, it is predicted to fail). I have already bought from Dell a new replacement disk.

The layout of the enclosure is RAID-5 with 12 hard disks (without any Hot Spare). This particular MD1200 had been initially configured using a NAS server which runs the Open-E Data Storage Software V7 on top. Right now however, I have the MD1200 connected to a Dell PowerEdge R710 (so, I also have access to it through the OMSA interface, in addition to the BIOS menu of the R710).

My question is: Is it safe to invoke the "Replace Member Disk" procedure through the OMSA of R710, even though the virtual disk of the MD1200 had been initially configured through another server?

Thanks a lot for your time! Let me know if you 'd like any more details.

MD3xxx - Access Virtual Disk mapped to each Host?

$

As we have just received our first Powervault MD38xxi, I am now playing around with it to get myself familiar with this box.

The intention is to use this storage as backup-destination for various platforms, thru various backup-applications (Veeam, MS DPM, Unitrend UVB ++)
As we intend to use the MD3860i only with iSCSI, we will have no direct attached servers connected to it, and plan to manage it thru "Out-of-Band" management only.

Now I have noticed, that for every host I create and connect to the MD3860i, there is created an "Access"-LUN, that is made visible to the iSCSI-host on connect.
As I have been searching for the purpose of this "Access"-LUN, if it could be deleted, has to be initialized, or what else, I have only come across a very limited description of it in the MSDM User-guide:

Quote...:
Each RAID controller in an MD Storage Array maintains an access virtual disk. The host-agent software uses the access virtual disk to communicate management requests and event information between the storage management station and the RAID controller module in an in-band–managed storage array. The access virtual disk is not available for application data storage. The default LUN is 31.

NOTICE: Removing or manipulating an access virtual disk can cause a loss of management access. If you remove an access virtual disk mapping from an in-band-managed storage array, MD Storage Manager can no longer access the storage array. Do not modify the access virtual disk either in the operating system or with MD Storage Manager.
....Quote end

That is all description/explaining I have been able to find within reasonable time...

So.. my questions:
1. It is unclear to me, if this Access-disk has to be initialized on the host? Or shall it just stay there un-initialized?
2. Is the Access-disk at all needed, when only doing out-of-band management, and intentions are NOT to install Dell's Host Software on attached hosts, but only use OS-native MPIO providers (primarily MS iSCSI MPIO)?
3. Can the Access-disk somehow be removed from the LUN's presented to the indiviual hosts?

MD3620i slow performance with 2012 R2 Hyper-V 2-node Cluster

$

Hi,

We have the following set up:

1x DR4100 (2x 10GbE Domain Team) - provides virtual tape library to Microsoft DPM 2016 (virtual guest)

2x R730:

2x 300GB system disk in RAID-1

4x 10GbE QLogic BCM57810 (2x dual port adapters)

4x 1Gb Broadcom NetXtreme (onboard, unused)

QLogic Driver 7.13.54.0 25/03/2016, Firmware 7.12/7.14 (multiple versions listed in QLogic Control Suite)

Card 1 Port 1 - iSCSI VLAN

Card 1 Port 2 - Domain Team

Card 2 Port 1 - iSCSI VLAN

Card 2 Port 2 - Domain Team

Domain Team is used for, Guest Communication, Cluster Communication, Host Management.

MTU is set to 1500 for all adapters, flow control is off.

These 2 hosts share CSV's on a MD3620i and MD1200

Md3620i - 22x 300GB SAS 15K, 1x RAID-10, 2 LUNs, Dual controllers (4x 10GbE, 2x per controller)

MD1200 - 20x 1TB SATA 7200,2x RAID-10 evenly split, 1 LUN per RAID array, connected to MD3620i with 2x 6Gb SAS

Arrays are 64k segements, formatted to 64k ntfs

I'm finding performance is slow when doing internal copying from LUN to LUN, even within the same LUN, or from MD1200 to MD3620i.

If I copy from Host to MD I get 1.2GB/sec, but moving data around on the LUNs gets me about 80-150MB/sec - surely I should be getting more than this with RAID-10?

When running DPM, backup speeds tend to max out about 500Mb/sec during a host-level VM backup.

I Would expect speeds of around 1GB/sec when accessing the MD3620i CSVs and 300MB/sec from the MD1200 CSVs due to the 6Gb SAS limitation.

When migrating VM storage from one LUN to another, using the failover cluster manager, seems to take forever also.

Any ideas what could be causing my slow speeds? Am I expecting too much from the MD?

Thanks

Can't Connect 4th Drive keeps logging off

Hi

I originally purchased a Dell TL4000 with 3 HH5 Fiber Channel Drives and want to add a fourth Drive to be fully efficient with my backups. I installed the Drive in the 4th bay, after it connects to all the Drives I get an error code HE: drive logged out Code: FB 04 and it disables the 4th drive. Also the 4th drive is being read as a SCSI drive not FC on the library display like the others. All four drives are connected individually to Two Dual Fiber Channel PCI Express cards to our Backup Server running OS - Win Ser 2008 enterprise R2 64bit.

Drive 3 is set the same as Drive 2 but with a different Loop ID which is 6

I’ve removed the drive from the 3rd bay to test out the drive that we ordered. It wasn’t defective and it worked fine so the drive is not the issue. I even had our vendor create the same environment in his location and it came up with the same results. So it must be a library issue. I looked up the library manual online and reset the library to factory default, nothing got resolved, still have the same issue 4th bay keeps logging off the drive. I even swapped the fiber channel to see if it was a card issue and it wasn’t.

Also I noticed that the SCSI element addressing is not set to what it should be on slot 4. Shouldn’t it be set at 259? This is how it’s displaying on the library console.

md3800i - serial connection

Hello,

Can anyone inform me as to what type of interface the md3800i uses for the serial connection? i mean, it uses mini-USB instead of the special pined wiring of the older models.

Ie: Would an FTDI Virtual USB serial connection work, or is it another proprietary type of cable?

I (as mentioned in a previous post) acquired a second hand md3800i, that hadn't been used in 2 years, and no-one knows the management information.

Thanks.

MD3400 SAS

Hi,

We recently setup our MD3400.

This is Direct attached storage setup using 2 LSI 12Gb SAS 9300-8e HBA, Dual Port cards and 4

12Gb HD-Mini to HD-Mini SAS Cable, 0.5M (470-AATS) cables attached too 2 esxi 6 hosts.

We followed the diagram for physically connecting the MD3400 to the 2 esxi hosts, so I believe this is correct. Physical installed the cards and rebooted the 2 esxi servers. We now see the storage adapters.

On one of the storage adapters on 1 of the esxi host I can see the virtual disk and capacity that was created, but only one path. On the other esxi I do not see any details under the storage adapter.

When I look in the modular disk storage manager raid controller properties host interfaces there is only 1 host showing up and all other ports are down.

I am not sure if i need any software on the esxi to detect etc as this is Direct Attached and not iSCSI.

Thank you
