I have a MD1220 with 24 - 146GB 15K sas drives.  I want to use it for storing backups of Hyper-V vm's and hosts.  These are small configurations so 1.5TB should be plenty of space. I would like to know what the optimum stripe element size and Read / Write policies would be best. My Choices are,

Stripe Element Size: 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, 256, 512KB or 1MB

Read Policy: Read Ahead, Adaptive Read Ahead, No Read ahead

Write Policy:  Write Back, Write Through, Force Write Back

Thanks

Dell Powervault NX3100

Hi,

For this device, in the owner's manual under section 'Removing a Hot-Swap Hard Drive' for step 2 - Using the RAID management software, prepare the drive for removal...

What is the RAID management software that the manual is referring to? Is this the Dell OpenManage software?

Is it necessary to prepare it using this software?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers.

Update firmware on 1950 and MD1000

I am trying to update the firmware on SAS drives connected to a PE 1950 and the split MD1000 connected to it.

I put in my service tag and find Nautilus_efi_A12_ZPE.exe as a Recommended Firmware update utility in the download list.  I download; use UsbMake.exe to produce a bootable USB drive.  1950 says there is no operating system on the USB drive.  I burn a CD; the screen displays “NK “ and locks up.  I research this and find A12 requires EUFI boot mode.  I don’t see any way to do that.  So it looks like A12 is NOT compatible with the 1950 bios.

I find NautilusDOSA48_ZPE.exe also in the download list.  With this I can create a CD which boots the machine.  It says it updated the drivers on both the MD1000 and the internal PERC card.  Nothing changed in the Server administrator display.  But in the Event viewer I now see warnings about non-certified drives.

I find NautilusDOSA49_ZPE.exe which is not in the download list, and is not listed as compatible with a 1950, but with this I can create a CD which boots the machine.  It also says it updated the drivers on both the MD1000 and the internal PERC card.  But again nothing changed in the Server administrator display.

I find FRMW_WIN_R261277.EXE also in the download list.  Under “Supported Operating Systems” it says “Not applicable”.  When I run it I get “The update package is running on an unsupported new operating system.  Do you want to continue?”  I say “yes”; and get “This Update Package is not compatible with your system configuration”.

I’m running OpenManage Server administrator 5.5.0, Windows 2012R2. I’m trying to set up Exchange server on the machine.

I have 7 drives in the MD1000:

5ea Vendor ID: DELL Product ID: ST3146356SS Revision: 0005.

1ea Vendor ID: DELL Product ID: ST32000SSSUN2.0T Revision: 0313

MDSM Version Mismatch

I just upgraded to the newest version of MDSM but the version I see under Help > About is only updated on the initial device inventory view.  When I open a new window to manage an array the version number listed under Help > About is still the old version.

How do I ensure that the new version is used everywhere?

If I create a volume on an MD3220i array using 1.8TB  4Kn advanced format drives will the LUNs be presented to an ESXi 6.0 initiator with 512 logical block size?

It looks like a supported configuration in the MD3220i support matrix but I wanted to verify before we start loading up on 1.8TB drives.

NICs on Dell EqualLogic PS6100X (e04j001)

Hiya

I have just been blessed with configuring this Dell SAN (e04j001) it appears to be a EqualLogic PS6100X after doing a bit of googling.

It has 2 control modules (part: E09m001). These each have a management port and 2 data nics.

The 2 data NICs are 1gb each.

Can these 2 data nics be teamed somehow to up the bandwidth, or do they work seporate?

How can I utilize them both to maximize bandwidth?

cheers Mike

Here's some technical data:

Correct me if Im wrong, I assume I need to use recover virtualDisk CLI

The virtual disk was created using:

create virtualDisk physicalDisks=(0,0 0,2 0,4 1,11 1,0 1,2 2,3 2,5 1,4 1,7 1,9 0,1 0,3 0,5 2,1 1,3 1,1 2,2 2,4 1,5 1,6 1,8) raidLevel=1 userLabel="SLOT13-XEN" diskGroupUserLabel="vol01" owner=1 segmentSize=128 capacity=274877906944 Bytes dssPreAllocate=true securityType=none;

In recovery data I have a line that says:

Volume,6D4AE520006E700200000FD4585C0685,SLOT13-XEN,6D4AE520006E711E000003204F27A41C,512,274877906944,103718912,131072,1,1,true,7

Is recover virtualDisk the correct way?

What additional parameters I need to collect?

Please help! :)

TL2000 and LTO6 reporting UNEXPECTED DATA in Diagnostic tests

$

Hi folks,

We have a TL2000/ULT3580-HH which has been giving us problems over the last few weeks.

The drive has been replaced and firmware upgraded to the latest for both drive and library, G9P1 and E.30. Host is a PowerEdge running W2K12 with a Dell 6GB SAS card hosting the library, driver version 6.2.5.5

Veeam 8 reported the drive disappearing during a backup and there's a corresponding event 11 in the server event log from LSI_SAS2 simply saying 'controller error'.

Running the ITDT with a scratch tape (and the Veeam tape services stopped) I get UNEXPECTED DATA and pretty much nothing else, with an associated LSI_SAS2 event 11 so the fault isn't at Veeam level. I've tried 3 different tapes.

What else can I look at?

Cheers
